History

The Devon Rex got it’s name because it was first bred & recognized in the Devonshire region of England in the 1960’s.  A domestic short-haired mated with a stray tom cat that had a peculiar curl to his coat. The resulting litter produced one curly-coated kitten.  This kitten was bred to a female Cornish Rex cat in an effort to produce kittens sharing the same coat qualities of the Cornish Rex breed.  It took several more breedings to get the ‘curly’ coat and low-set ears.

In 1968, the first Devon Rex cat was imported to the United States and by 1979 the breed received official recognition from the Cat Fanciers’ Association.
