My name is Liz and I am the vice president of the Siberian Husky Club of Greater NY and have been rescuing huskies for over 10 years. I got into rescue when I adopted Bandit, my 14 year old Husky. I did not have a darn clue about this breed so I learned as I went along. I then got involved with rescue and quickly became “addicted” When Bandit was 5 I rescued another husky who was abandonded with her 6 other littermates because they had ringworm. I am living proof that when you adopt a Siberian Husky it is like the potato chip syndrome, you cannot have just one. Now I have 4!!! We are very limited with our help as club membership has definitely dwindled down over the years. I rescue this wonderful breed because someone has to do it. These poor dogs do not know why they get dumped in the shelter and they do not do well in confined areas and quickly become agitated and often when you see a husky in a shelter ( as are many breeds) they get cage crazy. Many people see that cute little furball in the petstore or on a “video” and run right out and purchase one and do not have the slightest clue that they “grow” and “shed”…..bagfulls and bagfulls of fur. Or that they require a lot of exercise. We try to step in and inform the public at events about their characteristics.
