Ward Cove, AK 99928, USA

SOFA was organized in December 2012 to combat pet overpopulation, abandonment, homelessness, abuse, and neglect in the Southeast Alaska region. Although based out of Ketchikan and Juneau, our mission extends to SE AK communities where limited or no resources are available. Our focus in the first few years is improving access to basic veterinary services (including spay/neuter and vaccination) in communities that do not have (regular) veterinarians. In addition, we rescue pets — especially from outlying SE AK communities without an available shelter or rescue — and place them into responsible adoptive homes. We also work to transport adoptable pets from communities with high euthanasia rates to communities with larger populations and/or adoption rates. Our long-term goal is to support local, grassroots efforts to make communities self-sustaining in terms of animal welfare.
