Our primary focus is the rescue, rehabilitation and public education of Sled Dog breeds. These include Huskies, Malamutes, Akita’s and a few others. We also strongly believe in population control through responsible pet ownership and pet alteration. The dogs that we acquire come from high kill overpopulated shelters and owners who have to surrender their dogs for various reasons. Each of our dogs are fully vetted and altered before a new forever home is selected that meets the specific needs of each individual dog in our care.

We have been doing hands-on rescue for more than twenty-five years!? Wow–time flies!? Rescuing any breed of dog becomes very time consuming and very expensive.? It also takes a toll on your emotions and puts a burden on your entire family–not to mention friends.? We drive a 1978 Ford van–why?? Because of the amount of money we have spent on rescue dogs and rescue work.? That was our decision; we have so many happy memories of Malamutes that went on to live long, happy years with wonderful families, so we have no real regrets.?We have slowed down a little–we no longer haunt the animal shelters to find abandoned Malamutes.? That does not mean we will no longer help a breed we love–it means that we are asking breeders to be responsible for their own, asking owners to do the work of placing their own dogs, and asking those who love these dogs as much as we do, to begin their own involvement in saving dogs from shelters or offering their homes for foster care.? In other words, we are sharing the work and responsibility.? We still take them, rehabilitate and place Malamutes.

We are dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for Alaskan sled dogs who are either retired from the race or those pups that may just be more couch dog than sled dog ! We are dedicated to helping the musher with nowhere else to turn and people like you who desire to share your life with one of these great dogs from the “Great State” of Alaska.

Our organization is a nonprofit 501c3 (EIN 45-3911052), volunteer-only rescue organization. Although we strive to rescue and re-home Alaskan malamutes, wolfdogs, and other Nordic breeds, our main goal is to educate the public regarding the Nordic breed, the wolfdog and their wild cousin, the wolf.

We are the largest association of Malamute owners in Canada. The AMHL is a Canada-wide registered charity dedicated to working with shelters, rescue groups and the public, to provide: education; information; support in finding lost and stolen dogs; encouragement and recognition of responsible dog ownership and achievement; assistance in placing Alaskan Malamutes at risk; and, as a last resort, providing hands-on rescue in Canada wherever possible.
