RTRC is a non-profit, volunteer organization that rescues and fosters Rat terriers in private homes. Rat terriers are small, lively, loyal dogs with short coats. They are sturdy terriers that are genetically made up of a mix of breeds including the now extinct white terrier, whippet and Manchester terrier. They were predominantly used for small animal hunting including rats and hence they obtained their name. The dogs come into rescue from a variety of sources including owner surrenders, puppy mills and shelters. They are placed in foster homes for assessment, vetting and to get them ready for their adoptive families. All rat terriers coming into rescue are spay/neutered, vaccinated, tested for heartworm, and microchipped.
