The dog park is at the corner of 17th Street and Rose Street in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood. The park is adjacent to the Michigan Central Station, and about a block south of Michigan Avenue.
It’s open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Disc Golf Course/Dog Park. This is a great disc golf course and dogs roam free and happy for acres. There is a creek of sorts on the far end for the dogs to get a drink and take a dip. 2.6 acre fenced off dog park. Location: Green Springs. Directions: Exit 258 Greensprings Ave. off I-65, east, then left on Green Springs Hwy, 0.5 mile, right at 16th Ave. (1st light), then right through the old Apts. up hill past Tennis Center, stay left to back parking lot.
Fenced; under the freeway. Has 2 areas–a smaller fenced-in area for dogs under 25 lb; and a large fenced area for larger dogs. Has a poop station in each area with plastic bags and a garbage can. Location: Off Cleveland Ave, downtown, near the old train station and the skateboard park. Directions: From Meridian Street go under the freeway, turn right on Cleveland; it’s right there.

Fabulous trails go all around the lake, some wide open fields, but trails mostly meander through the woods, with many small trails for dogs to circle about on leading to water’s edge and such. Location: Bragaw Street between Tudor and University Drive. Directions: West on Tudor if coming from Seward HWY. Turn left on Bragaw. Parking available across from UAA dorms, or behind Ak Native Hospital on weekends.

I chose the name Positive Rewards to reflect my training philosophy; the use of positive reward (reinforcement) training. Achieving success is always rewarding – whether it is the individual learning or the trainer observing comprehension on the part of the student. For people not familiar with the concept of reinforcement training, the idea of being able to effectively teach without using physical or verbal correction seems impossible or improbable. I train by using the motivational desires of the individual.I think of it as a “Fair Trade” agreement between myself and the animal I am working with. If it is a behavior which I am trying to promote – some action which I’d like the animal to perform more frequently, I’ll highlight that particular behavior through use of a marker followed by some form of a reinforcer which the animal desires. If the behavior is not one which I ‘want’, I’ll choose not to reward the behavior. My lack of response communicates ” try something else”. And that is what will occur. “But what happens when he misbehaves?” Misbehavior can be a reflection of lack of understanding, lack of motivation , or inadvertent reinforcement on our part! Many ‘bad’ behaviors work because we have inadvertently rewarded the behavior in our ignorance. By understanding how the learning process occurs, I demonstrate to owners how to change their animal’s behavior without the physical use of force or intimidation.
