Small designated dog park. This small, well maintained, fenced and double gated dog park with two park benches is possibly the only one in West Virginia at this time. It encompasses one typical- size city lot on a major street downtown. Hours are from dawn to dusk (no lights). No regular water supply is available inside the fence at this time, but a neighbor allows use of her outside spigot to fill the various bowls that are inside the fence and I understand that some people would like to see a fountain installed. I also understand that some individuals have occasionally provided small donations to her for this kindness, and I am quite sure that is appreciated. There are bags and trash containers provided for clean- up. The rules note that choke chains are not permitted, though when I noted this (my large Lab mix wears one due to her size and the fact that she pulls on the leash), I was told that it was not a big deal. I recommend not wearing the choke chain on this occasion, and will not do so myself the next time. The surrounding neighborhood isn’t the best, but the facility is spotlessly maintained and has a lot to offer. Another caveat: my puppy was able to slip out between pickets in the wrought iron- style fence, so small dogs may require extra vigilance. Otherwise, this location may be Charleston’s best kept secret. Location: Washington Street just blocks from the Capitol. Directions: Get off of I- 77 at exit 99 (exit for the Capitol) and go strait until you reach Washington St. Turn Rt. on Washington and begin looking on your right. About five blocks from the turn, the dog park in on the right, with limited parking behind it.
