The Bernalillo County Animal Control and Protection Department’s primary responsibility is to protect the safety, health and welfare of the public while enforcing the humane treatment of animals.
The Brookfield Police Department employs one Animal Control Officer who provides numerous services to the city and its residents.
Stray animals picked up by the Animal Control Officers are taken to the Bedford County Animal Shelter located on Falling Creek Road. Manned by County staff, the shelter is an award-winning facility offering separate climate controlled quarters for dogs and cats, puppies and kittens.

This service generally concentrates on the dog population of the Town, but is also responsible for complaints dealing with raccoons, deer, trapped wildlife, and other concerns dealing with domestic or wild animals.

When you must be away we are delighted to have your pet stay with us. Our kennel area and exercise runs are entirely enclosed, heated and air conditioned. We require that all pets staying with us are current on their core vaccinations, including Kennel Cough for dogs, have a negative fecal in the past 12 months and have a current application of flea prevention. We can provide everything your pet needs to stay with us, but if your pet is on a special diet we recommend bringing that along. For your convenience you can print off and fill out the boarding release form prior to bringing your pet in for boarding. PLEASE NOTE THAT AS OF 12-1-10 WE ARE REQUIRING KENNEL COUGH VACCINATIONS EVERY 6 MONTHS FOR BOARDING PATIENTS.
Comfort Inn Urbandale is pet friendly! They allow two pets per room of any size for an additional charge of $5 per pet per night.
Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Northwest accepts two pets of any size for a one time fee of $20.
Ramada Tropics Resort & Conference Center Des Moines is pet friendly. Up to two pets of any size are allowed for an additional fee of $10 per night, pet pet.
Econo Lodge Inn & Suites allows two pets under 40 lbs for a fee of $10 per pet per night.
Super 8 Motel Stuart allows two pets under 45 lbs with a refundable deposit of $25 per pet.
Americinn Stuart allows up to two dogs of any size per guest room for an additional fee of $15 per night.
Super 8 Winterset Ia is pet friendly. They welcome pets of any size for an additional fee of $10 per pet per night. There is no specified limit on the number of pets per room.
Up to two pets under 30lbs are welcome for an additional $25 per stay.
